Current status

UCalgary is upgrading Wi-Fi to improve  reliability, performance and long-term capacity. Upgrade work is being completed building by building and may cause temporary wireless outages during scheduled maintenance windows.

Most upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of December 2026. Final project work and service optimization may continue until March 2027.

Wi-Fi upgrade schedule and planned outages

The schedule below lists buildings that have already been upgraded and planned Wi-Fi upgrade work for the next 30 days. If your building is not listed, there may be no upgrade work currently scheduled in that building, or the building may appear in a future schedule update. Dates may change as the rollout continues, so check this page regularly.

What to expect during an upgrade

Each building is upgraded during one scheduled maintenance window. Wireless service may be unavailable or intermittent while work is underway.

  • Buildings with active classrooms or teaching spaces will be upgraded overnight where possible.
  • Buildings that are mainly office space may be upgraded during regular business hours.
  • Wired network connections are expected to remain available in most areas.
  • Wireless-dependent devices and peripherals may be interrupted during the maintenance window.

How to prepare

  • Save your work before the maintenance window starts.
  • Use a wired connection where available.
  • Use mobile data or an off-campus network if you need wireless access during the outage.
  • Restart your device after the upgrade is complete.

Wi-Fi network name changes

As part of the upgrade, UCalgary is simplifying Wi-Fi network names by retiring the "Air" prefix and moving to the "UC" naming structure.

During the transition, you may see different network names in different buildings. Some buildings will use the new UC-Secure network while others may still use AirUC-Secure until their upgrade is complete.

Old nameNew name
AirUC-Secure UC-Secure
AirUC-Residence UC-Residence
AirUC-Guest No current change
eduroam No current change

If UC-Secure is available in your building, connect to UC-Secure. If your building has not been upgraded yet, continue using AirUC-Secure or an available UCalgary Wi-Fi network.

Project timeline

The project team is completing upgrades in phases to reduce disruption during high-activity academic periods. The goal is to complete as much work as possible by the end of August 2026, with most upgrades expected by the end of December 2026. Full project completion is anticipated by the end of March 2027.

FAQs

Why is UCalgary upgrading its WiFi?

UCalgary's current wireless equipment has reached the end of its supported lifespan. Replacing this equipment reduces the risk of outages and improves reliability, performance and capacity across campus.

Work can take up to a full business day or an overnight maintenance window, depending on the building and the type of spaces it contains. Wireless service may be intermittent until the upgrade is complete.

Most centrally managed classroom technologies and printing services are expected to remain available through wired network connections. Wireless-dependent devices may have temporary interruptions during the maintenance window.

University websites, databases and systems are expected to remain available through wired connections, mobile networks or off-campus internet access. Some internal services may require a wired connection or VPN during wireless maintenance.

UCalgary is retiring the "Air" prefix and standardizing network names under the "UC" naming structure. This should make the wireless network easier to recognize and support during and after the transition.

Use UC-Secure where it is available. If your building has not been upgraded yet, continue using the available UCalgary Wi-Fi network until the transition reaches your building.

Your building may not have been upgraded yet. Check the schedule on this page. If your building is marked as upgraded and UC-Secure still does not appear, restart your device and contact the IT Support Centre if the issue continues.

Some buildings may continue to use AirUC-Secure until their Wi-Fi upgrade is complete. During the transition period, different buildings may display different network names. If UC-Secure is available in your building, use UC-Secure. If UC-Secure is not yet available, continue using the airuc-secure network until your building is upgraded.

No. AirUC-Guest is not changing as part of the Wi-Fi network name transition. Guests should continue using AirUC-Guest.

No. eduroam is not changing as part of the Wi-Fi network name transition. Visitors and users who normally connect using eduroam should continue using eduroam.
